A stained glass piece in any home is a great, decorative addition to any room or setting.

What is Stained Glass?

Stained glass refers to those items containing a serious of colored glass often in the form of a specific design or even a picture. Often times the pieces are made through the process of adding metallic salts to the glass. However, there are some other basic types of stained glass items. Some stained glass pieces, for instance, are comprised of isolated pre colored pieces of glass formed together to make the desired picture or pattern. Also, some stained glass pieces may have been constructed by applying a stain to the glass segments from which the pieces will eventually be cut and then assembled together.

How is Stained Glass Made?

As touched on previously, not all stained glass is made in the same way depending upon the crafter's preferences and level of ability and/or training. For the beginner, the preferred method is likely cutting segments of pre colored glass pieces and, then, assembling them in the desired pattern or picture shape. All one needs for this project are some stained glass supplies including colored glass sheets, stained glass grinders, a glass cutter, foil and a soldering tool. When using tools such as these, the crafter should take great care to ensure that safety precautions are followed. Not only can the sharp glass edges be dangerous, but so too can the tools such as the soldering tool with its high temperature tip. The stained glass crafter will first make or select a pattern for the stained glass item to be made. Based on that pattern, she or he will then cut out various pieces of the chosen colored glass and assemble them together based on the pattern. She or he should ensure that the edges of each piece are grinded according to the specific needs of the project. Next, the glass pieces edges should be wrapped in foil. Finally, the pieces should be soldered together so that they will remain intact according to the pattern designed or selected by the crafter.

Various Types of Stained Glass

The stained glass designs available to be made or purchased come in a wide variety of styles. Often, stained glass will feature a pictorial representation, for instance. While this can be a difficult project to accomplish, the end results are quite lovely. These representations can be visuals for biblical stories, scenes from nature or anything imagined by the mind's eye. Other stained glass options include those pieces containing patterns made up of a variety of colors. For instance, some pieces feature various geometric shapes fashioned together to make an appealing presentation.

Decorating with Stained Glass

Commonly stained glass takes the shape of windows, but this need not always be the case. For instance, some individuals choose to insert stained glass panels in various places throughout a home not as windows, per se, but decorative wall hangings. Then there are free standing stained glass items such as stained glass lamps. These types of stained glass pieces are both decorative and functional. Plus, a stained glass lamp can be easily moved about within the room or from room to room based on the desires of the home owner.

Maintenance of Stained Glass

Because the color and design of stained glass items are securely built or crafted into the project, cleaning the pieces is not difficult at all. An ordinary window cleaner will usually do the job. To ensure the cleanliness and shine of your stained glass pieces, this type of cleaning should be conducted on a regular basis such as every week. Aside from cleaning, stained glass items such as table lamps should be kept from small children as much as possible. Because glass is, of course, fragile, one knock off of the table could render the item broken beyond repair.

Purchasing Stained Glass

When in the market to purchase a stained glass item,
there are various resources one should consult. First, the Internet is a good resource for investigating just what type of piece will fit into your décor. Second, visiting a glass specialty store should give the consumer a good idea of what types of items are on the market. Third, the consumer should consider the possibility of creating the object on her or his own. Even if the items of choice are stained glass windows, there are many free stained glass patterns that will easily guide the consumer through the project.
